Dirt
Crew

An eight-week gravel adventure program for kids ages 8–13. Build skills, build miles, build confidence — and finish a ride that would have seemed impossible on Day 1.

“I can do hard things. I can go farther than I thought. I belong out here.”

This Isn't a Racing Program

Dirt Crew is a gravel cycling program built on a simple idea: every kid should have access to the adventure, confidence, and community that comes from riding a bike outside. No podiums. No times. No pressure. Just riders learning to go farther than they thought possible — together.

Five Core Principles

🏔️

Adventure Over Competition

No podiums, no finish times. Finishing together beats finishing first — every single time.

📈

Progress Over Performance

Success is personal. Riding a hill you walked last week, fixing a chain, showing up scared and trying anyway — that counts.

🤝

Belonging

Every rider is Crew, regardless of ability or gear. Jerseys, traditions, and team identity reinforce that every week.

🔧

Independence

Riders learn to manage their own bike, pacing, food, water, and attitude. Real-world skills on two wheels.

💪

Challenge With Support

We push riders slightly past what they think they can do — inside a safe, well-coached environment with a great adult-to-rider ratio.

How It Works

Dirt Crew runs for eight weeks — one session per week, 75–90 minutes each. Riders start at 3–4 miles and work up week by week, finishing the season with the Dirt Crew Celebration Ride: a full-day gravel adventure that no one could have done on Week 1.

Every session follows the same rhythm: a group warm-up, a focused skill lesson, the ride itself, and a crew circle at the end to reflect and celebrate. Each week has a theme, a key skill, and a life lesson baked in.

Season
September – October, Eastern Panhandle WV
Why Fall?

The Eastern Panhandle is at its best in September and October — cooler temps, drier gravel roads, and peak fall foliage on the Celebration Ride finish. School routines have settled in, daylight is still plenty, and it's before hunting season. It's the right window.

The Celebration Ride

The season ends with a full-day gravel adventure on real roads. No timing. No podiums. The start line message is simple: “Today we're going on an adventure together.”

Every finisher crosses the same line and earns that season's GOAT Medal — 3D printed, yours to keep. The design is different every year. Come back next season and you'll earn a new one. The goal: collect them all.

Explorer Route
8–10 miles

For younger or first-season riders — a full day, a big finish.

Adventure Route
15–20 miles

The primary goal for most riders — miles that would have seemed impossible in Week 1.

Challenge Route
25–30 miles

Future track for returning riders ready for more.

Find Your Level

Riders are grouped by skill and experience — not age. Everyone rides together, but each group is coached to where they are right now. First-timers start at Crew. Work your way up, earn your medal, and one day you'll say it: “I'm Goat Crew.”

Crew

You're officially part of the Crew — brand new to group riding. Learn helmet fit, starting and stopping, basic shifting, and how to ride together. First rides are 3–5 miles on gentle terrain.

Dirt Crew

You belong here — now build on it. Body position, loose gravel handling, climbing, descending, and riding confidently with the group over 5–8 miles.

Adventure Crew

Longer miles, bigger terrain. Emphasis on pacing, self-sufficiency, basic mechanicals, and building toward the full Adventure Route on Celebration Ride day.

Goat Crew

You've earned it. Goat Crew riders take on the Adventure Route and come back each season as Goat Crew II, Goat Crew III — mentoring newer riders and going further every year.

Returning Riders
Goat Crew II · Goat Crew III · and beyond

Come back for another season and your Goat Crew level goes up. Goat Crew II riders take on bigger routes and a mentor role with the newer groups. The medal changes every year — collect the set.

Advanced Program · Ages 14–17

Expedition

For experienced teen riders ready to push further — longer routes, more elevation, and a bigger Celebration Ride goal. Expedition riders mentor the younger groups and go after the 25–30 mile challenge route. Details coming soon.

Built In From Day One

Every route is pre-ridden and documented before riders touch it. Helmets are non-negotiable. Our adult-to-rider ratio keeps every group manageable, and every coach has emergency procedures and communication equipment on every ride.

  • Helmet inspections every session
  • Background-checked, trained coaches
  • Pre-ridden, documented routes with bailout points
  • Emergency contacts and medical info on file
  • Weather, heat, and air-quality protocols
  • Low-traffic, wide gravel roads — no highways

No Rider Left Out

The biggest risk in a program like this is building something only reachable by families who already cycle. We're addressing that from the start.

Loaner Bikes & Helmets
No rider excluded for lack of gear. We maintain a loaner fleet for riders who need one.
Scholarships Available
No rider excluded for cost. Financial assistance is available — just ask.
Equipment Library
Gloves, hydration packs, jackets, and repair kits available to borrow, built over time via donations.
